Liveable Centers Study

A Vision for ConnectION

About the Study

In partnership with the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC), the St. George Place Redevelopment Authority and Uptown Development Authority were awarded funding to conduct a Livable Centers Study in the St. George Place–Uptown area.

The study reimagines auto-focused infrastructure to create mixed-use, walkable communities with:

  • Multi-modal transportation options

  • Improved environmental quality

  • Safer pedestrian connections

  • Greater economic development and housing diversity

Livable Centers are designed as places where people can live, work, and play with less reliance on cars—encouraging a connected mix of land uses that are walkable, accessible, and sustainable

Project Background

The St. George Place–Uptown Livable Centers Study focuses on bridging critical mobility gaps in Houston’s west side.

St. George Place

A mixed-use neighborhood home to small businesses and working-class families.

Uptown Houston

A dynamic urban district with the Galleria, hotels, retail, and residential communities.

While improvements like METRO’s Silver Line Bus Rapid Transit on Post Oak Boulevard have expanded regional connectivity, challenges remain:

  • Multi-modal transportation options

  • Improved environmental quality

  • Safer pedestrian connections

The study aims to connect these systems and deliver a reliable, safe, and resilient mobility framework that supports residents, workers, and visitors.

Study Area

The Livable Centers Study covers about 3 square miles, roughly 6.2 miles west of Downtown Houston.

South – Westpark Drive
West – Hillcroft Avenue
North – Westheimer Road
East – I-610 West Loop

This area includes:

  • St. George Place’s mixed-use neighborhood and small business community
  • Uptown Houston’s commercial and retail hub anchored by The Galleria
  • Residential areas that make the district a key employment and lifestyle center in Houston
